Abstract
This study discusses the need for this first generation Korean-American population to evaluate their own values, beliefs, and world views. Upon reflection, meditation, and the workings of the Holy Spirit, illuminate wisdom and foresight to know God's will for their lives. In order to help this process, this study proposes several concepts and suggestions to assist the aging Korean immigrant population. First this study will endeavor to compare and contrast the concepts and beliefs regarding traditional aging held among immigrants versus suggestions from the Bible. A second consideration is the role of social justice for the aging population from a Christian standpoint. Many first generation Korean-Americans do not have a clear understanding of spirituality or of what it means to be Christ-like, this study attempts to define these terms in a meaningful and applicable manner for this population. Many elderly Korean immigrants face a new reality regarding aging, many struggling with changing social support structures, they may become isolated or disparaged. It is necessary to help these individuals to develop a stronger sense of self, in order to assist this process. In order to evaluate the value of possible service projects and useful lectures to assist this population self evaluate, the author of this study volunteered with a group called: New Jersey Silver Mission.
